ABA Therapy for Individuals With Down Syndrome
Now Covered in Massachusetts
Beginning January 2026, commercial and MassHealth insurance plans in Massachusetts will be required to cover applied behavior analysis (ABA) services for individuals with Down syndrome.

What Is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) uses the science of behavior to teach socially significant skills in meaningful ways. Recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, ABA is the leading evidence-based treatment for autism and has been demonstrated to be effective with a wide range of challenging behaviors across various disabilities.
Through a variety of interventions, ABA aims to:
- teach new skills
- strengthen useful behaviors
- decrease behaviors that interfere with growth and learning.
ABA services can take place in the home, school, community, or at one of BCI’s specialized Learning Centers across Massachusetts.

While ABA is primarily known as a therapy for autism, it can also be effective for individuals with Down syndrome who:
ABA works well with individuals with Down syndrome because it focuses on motivation and reinforcement to encourage positive behaviors. It helps build essential skills in real-life contexts, making learning both meaningful and practical. Additionally, ABA teaches generalization, enabling learners to apply their skills across various people, settings, and situations, fostering greater independence.
